It is with great pleasure that I can report that we held our first Yoga Teachers Gathering at the Tuam Yoga & Pilates Studio. A few months ago I had shared my idea for this with Charlotte Farragher, who runs this lovely studio, along with her partner Rory Murphy. We left it to marinate for a little while and revisited the idea a few weeks ago. Charlotte and Rory mulled it over and then graciously offered to host our inaugural event.
Then storm Emma hit. She tried her best to throw us off our course and she almost succeeded. But after taking a quick poll of those who had confirmed attendance, it was decided to go ahead and meet up so as not to lose momentum.
e did a short practice together. Just a few sun salutes, a couple of standing poses, some yin postures and 3 easy oms. After being housebound for a couple of days due to the snow, it was great to open out the sofa-shaped, Netflix-blinded body. It was nice to practice with others and be able to comment on poses while doing them or ask a question without having to worry that someone was being left behind. Teaching mixed level is great and necessary and real world, but not having to say anything but the name of the pose was quite liberating.
Then we got to the important bit – tea and cake! I made an assortment of vegan-friendly treats and one very vegan-unfriendly Madeira cake. We took our herbal tea and regular tea and coffee and sat down and had a good chat. We did a quick sharing circle – aka introducing oneself – and myself and Rory were put on a time limit (admittedly, this was probably needed, at least for me, aka Chatty Cathy). It was very cool to hear what everyone does, where they teach and how they came to yoga.
We also talked about where we’d like the group to go. We decided to try meet monthly. There was a consensus that workshops would be great, or even just getting different teachers in to teach us, or maybe speak about topics related to yoga (anatomy was a popular topic). For the meetings that aren’t organised with a guest teacher / speaker, we will work on a topic together as a group — we are teachers after all. For example, we might workshop designated poses – share our cues, how we build up to the pose, contraindications, anatomy of the pose, variations, etc. The possibilities here are endless.
So as it stands, the next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, 14 April 2018, 3-5pm at Tuam Yoga & Pilates Studio. Charlotte will have her Tuam Yoga & Pilates FaceBook page up to date and I will keep this journal of our meetings so we will be able to look back at what we’ve done, a kind of ‘Episode Notes’ page for any of you who listen to podcasts. We would welcome any yoga teachers to attend — just let us know in advance so we can make sure to have enough tea bags!
If anyone reads this and would be interested in teaching us a workshop or sharing your knowledge of a topic that would be relevant for yoga teachers, you can get in touch with myself at email@example.com or Charlotte Farragher at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please note, however, that we are not interested in advertising any products other than the products of knowledge and good quality teaching. We, in turn, are not trying to sell anything. Our group is purely about sharing knowledge, friendship and inspiration.
